Name:
Joel Miller (non-canon name)
Alias:
Texas (Tess), Old Timer (Henry), Crazy Man (David and his cannibal group)
Age:
54
Gender:
Male
Sexual Orientation:
Heterosexual
Faction:
Survivor
Role:
Ellie's protector and smuggler
Location:
In the Boston wilderness with Ellie/Tommy's Dam
Physical Description:
He has a heavy, muscular build, with dark, graying hair and a beard. According to sewage's water level ruler, he appears to be between 5 feet 10in (177.8cm) and 5 feet 11in (180.3cm) tall. Joel has many cuts and scars, which can be seen on his face and arms (you can see the arm scars when Joel is equipped with a t-shirt). At first sight, Joel looks just like an average, middle aged, guy. But he is actually quite fit and limber, and can kill without hesitation if needed/required.Joel wears a watch that was a gift from Sarah for his birthday the day before the outbreak; twenty years later, it has broken, likely from two decades of surviving in a post-outbreak world. He keeps the watch in remembrance of Sarah. Joel seems to sigh sadly when Ellie mentions that it is broken in the early chapters of The Last of Us.
Personality:
Joel is described by some as a violent thug, a brutal killer, and a mad torturer, but he has a much lighter side for people who don't try to blindly and mindlessly assault him, such as Bill (sort of), Sarah, Ellie, Henry and Sam, Tess, Maria, Tommy, and Tommy's men.
Alignment:
Joel is an antihero of some sort, because he started off in a group of men he now despises: Hunters. He killed innocent people, not hesitant to kill even women that didn't even touch him. He grew to have a soft spot for friends like Tess and Ellie, and now only kills those who betray him, want to kill him, and those who want to harm people close to him.
Likes:
Ellie, who is the cure, singing (when he was younger), music, staying alive, Tommy, Sarah, Maria (even though she was hostile at first).
Dislikes:
Ethan (the firefly), questions about Sarah, which he will avoid, Infected, Hunters, who remind Joel of his twisted past, and Fireflies.
Strengths:
Joel can hit/punch pretty hard, and can perform many heavy attacks with little fatigue. Joel can out-brawl his opponents, and can easily inflict fear into enemies. Joel can wield a wide range of weapons, has excellent hearing, and has great crafting skills (possibly due to his past as a construction worker).
Weaknesses:
Some say Joel suffers from PTSD due to losing his daughter and murdering for his survival. Joel's strength isn't always consistent. He's been saved several times, including by Ellie. Joel can die, obviously, and can't inhale spores, because he is not immune to cordyceps. Joel will die if bitten, like normal people. Joel's age limits his skills he had when he was in his prime (After the cordyceps hit, the 20 year interval.)
History and Background:
Joel was born on September 26, most likely between 1984 and 1985, and grew up in Texas with his younger brother Tommy. It is also stated during the 'Fall' section of the campaign that Joel raised Tommy and that they both struggled with it.Sometime in his youth, Joel had a daughter named Sarah and was married to his wife for a short period of time. Saddled early in life with the responsibilities that come with being a father, he never had the opportunity to attend college. No mention is given as to the fate or whereabouts of Sarah's mother. However, it is revealed in a conversation between Joel and Ellie that the subject of whatever happened is very painful for Joel to talk about, and that he raised their daughter as a single parent for most of his life. They live in a typical two story single-family home somewhere in or around Austin, Texas. This is clarified in the opening scenes when Tommy and Joel state they need to leave Travis County by taking Texas State Highway 71.
Joel worked in construction, possibly as a carpenter. In the prologue, during a phone conversation with Tommy, he mentions desperately needing to keep his job with a contractor. Building plans lay on his bedside table and several copies of a book called Construction Regionalism can be seen on top of his bookshelf.
Music was an interest to Joel in the years prior to the outbreak; he has a guitar and an extensive music collection (both CD and vinyl) in his room. He mentions to Ellie that in his younger years he wanted to become a singer.
He seemed to have ambitions of starting his own business before the outbreak, with "Everything You Need To Know About Creating A Startup" also on a table next to his bed. His job kept him fit, and he also owned a treadmill (seen in his bedroom). Additionally, he tells Ellie that he often went on hikes with his daughter, reinforced by pictures of hiking scenery in his house.Despite his long working hours he still found time to spend quality time with Sarah, as seen in photographs displayed throughout their home showing the two on a cruise, at a carnival with Tommy and at one of Sarah's soccer matches. In the hours leading up to the outbreak, Sarah gives him a new watch as a birthday gift to replace the one he had broken months before. This becomes a cherished memento he manages to keep in the turbulent years ahead.
He also became extremely dedicated to Ellie, using any means possible to save her and keep her safe. He tortured several cannibals to find out Ellie's location, and then killed a prisoner after he gained information about Ellie's location. Ellie also cares greatly for Joel when she cares for him when he was injured, just as Joel cared for her and protected her throughout their journey. They had a father and daughter bond. Upon meeting Ellie, he initially has a rocky relationship with her. However, Joel later grows to trust her and finds her reliable at most times such as Ellie spotting for Joel or providing support. As time passes, Joel establishes a father-daughter relationship with Ellie, reminding him of his beloved daughter, Sarah. Ellie and Joel journeyed across the country to Salt Lake City, Utah, in order to find a cure, but when Joel realizes that through Ellie's death, others will be saved, he decides to save one instead of millions. Who said the cure would work, anyway? Joel, afraid of losing yet another person he cared for, saved Ellie and killed Marlene, because she'd only track him down. Five years later, the Fireflies have rekindled their flame. Joel, the essential protector of Ellie, will stop them at all costs.

Roleplay Example:
"Of course, Joel! But you should let me go on my..." Ellie said, but quickly became quiet and alert as Joel paused, extending his arm out in front of Ellie as he pulled his assault rifle off the side of his backpack, weapon ready. Ellie removed her bow and arrow from her backpack, beads of sweat on her forehead, even in the cold of the Winter. "Ah, shit. Fireflies.." Joel muttered, a concerned, yet fierce look on his face as the snow gently settled and rested itself upon Joel's rough hair. Joel quickly threw a brick at one of the three hunters, rising up to shoot him, but he did not pull the trigger, maintaining stealth as he and Ellie ran into an abandoned building, Joel with his back against an empty bookshelf. "Hey, Luke. That brick got your ear bleeding.. We're gonna have fun fucking up these damn tourists, eh?" The rest of the conversation Joel didn't hear.
"Joel? What the fuck are we gonna do?" Ellie whispered, but Joel silenced her as a hunter strolled past the two with his rifle raised, not even looking their way. Ellie quickly ran up to this clueless hunter, stabbing him in the throat as he collapsed onto the floor with a slight grunt. "Keith?" Another hunter called out, turning around the corner. Ellie, startled as she hopped behind a counter, was ready to take a shot with an arrow aimed directly at his head, but stopped. She couldn't get a clear shot due to his weird movements. This said hunter, startled by his friend's dead body, alerted the other remaining Hunter. "Jacob! The fuckers killed Keith!"
"Shit!" The other Firefly yelled, turning his back. "Whoever it is, we're gonna have some FUN torturing them. I'm gonna-" The Hunter known as Jacob's eyes widened as he stared at Joel, who had the Hunter known as Luke at gunpoint, the shorty on his right temple. Joel's finger rested itself on the trigger, and Ellie stood back, watching attentively. Joel quickly pushed Luke into the Jacob, queuing Ellie to shoot Luke as Joel sidestepped around him, shooting the other Hunter in the head as he flew backward, his blood covered head resting against a pole. Joel let out a sigh of relief, inserting his shorty into it's holster.
"Whew.. that's the last of those fuckers, right?" Ellie said, as she walked alongside Joel.
"I'm too old for this.." Joel muttered, and Ellie patted him on the arm. "I'm pretty sure that's the last of em, Ellie," as they continued onward.
Ellie ran ahead, spotting Tommy's Dam in the distance. Joel nodded, and Ellie grinned as she stopped at a wall just high enough for him to boost her up. "Ellie.. think you can lift me up by now?"
"Pssh. Yeah!" Ellie replied, clearly confident in her muscular strength. This confidence faded as she fell off the wall trying to lift Joel up, landing back-first in the soft, yet freezing cold snow. The same happened to Joel, and their heads were opposite each other as Joel got up, boosting Ellie up once more.
"Yeah.. you ain't got the strength yet, kiddo. Find me a ladder or somethin'." Joel said calmly, standing patiently until Ellie dropped a very rusty ladder, and Joel began to climb up. Right when he was near the top, on about the third rung from the top, the ladder snapped, but Joel was luckily quick enough to grab the ledge with his right hand, bringing himself up with a slight grunt. "Let's go."
Extras: Joel, as we know, has a slight country accent.. Joel had a PS3 in his house, but since he is not a fan of video games, it must have belonged to Sarah. Joel enjoys coffee, and possibly enjoyed hunting. (As in Deer hunting, not as a Hunter)
