ELLIE
CLOSED
Ellie was born sometime in the year 2019, six years after the spread of the fungal pandemic. As a result, she grew up in an oppressive military quarantine zone in Boston, Massachusetts with little knowledge of the world prior to the infection. For a time she was raised by mother, Anna, then after the death of her mother, Marlene continued to look after her, a promise she made to her mother, Anna.
Marlene realizes that Ellie was immune and desperate to send her out of Boston, hires smugglers Joel and Tess to bring her out of the the city before the military wipes out the Fireflies. Joel reluctantly accepts the offer. He and Tess later find that they are smuggling an infected girl, but Tess decides to continue on their path.
The trio manage to reach the rendezvous point in the Capitol Building, but they find only bodies of Fireflies and the military closing in. Revealing that she has been infected, Tess insists Ellie and Joel continuing on their own while she buys them some time. Ellie feels guilty about having Tess sacrifice for her, but Joel firmly decides not to bring that up and, to her annoyance, lists down what to do and otherwise.
The spring arrives as Joel and Ellie reach Salt Lake City, the intended final destination. Joel, realizing what Ellie has been through, tells her that they can leave and return to Tommy's, but she thanks him and remarks that she wants to go through with this. There in the city they encounter the Fireflies, who fled from Boston to their new haven. Ellie is immediately taken to for research on Marlene's order, which will possibly create a vaccine for the infection, at the cost of Ellie's life. Joel later gets to know of this through Marlene's disclosure. He protests against it but Marlene disregards, saying that she is in a position to make decision, and that her decision to sacrifice Ellie will save millions. She spares Joel's life, but Joel, having been bonded with Ellie so much that she has become a substitute daughter to him, battles his way through the facility and brings Ellie out. He is cornered by Marlene, who willingly lets him decide Ellie's fate. Joel secures Ellie in his car, before killing Marlene, fearing she will later chase Ellie.
Joel delivers Ellie out of the city, heading for "home". He lies to Ellie that the Fireflies have failed to create a vaccine and gave up on it, much to her dismay. It is speculated that prior to this he killed the three surgeons in Ellie's operation room and Marlene to hide the fact that Ellie may be carrying the cure, a coverup which can give her a normal life. The two finally reach Tommy's dam, where Joel remarks that they can return to their normal life. Eventually, Ellie confronts Joel and questions him whether what he tells her is true. Joel replies, "I swear", leaving a doubting Ellie to her own belief.
Having been raised in an environment where modern standards and values have deteriorated, Ellie is considerably rash, impulsive, and temperamental, and does not faze at the notion of using violence as a means to an end or verbal vulgarity as a way of expressing how she feels. However, she manages to maintain a particular innocence as she has yet to see the darkest sides of human nature and retains a palpable trust in people. This serves as the juxtaposition to Joel's wary, morose outlook on post-pandemic life. Ellie later comes to understand the extent a human can become brutal when she witnesses a group of people cannibalizing a victim. She suffers from his trauma, but comes to terms with it anyway, after reasoning what she's done to others.
Ellie is also perceptibly clever and witty, and will do whatever it takes to keep Joel and herself alive. She takes orders from Joel, but all the while makes it clear she does not "need any babysitting at all". Ellie cares greatly about Joel and once she tries to save him by jumping into the water despite her inability to swim. She has a scar on her right eyebrow, though it is currently unknown when, where, or how she obtained it.
Ellie is enthusiastic about the outside world, given her confinement to her quarantine zone during her childhood. She is obsessed with things she collects from others, illustrated through her interest in music, movies, books, and video games. She frequently remarks her amusement upon finding interesting stuff throughout her trip, an annoying fact which Joel comes to accept.
Ellie seems to adhere to no religion, as seen when she claims that she goes "back and forth" when asked by Sam if she believes in an afterlife. She says that she would like to believe it, but admits "I...guess not."
Ellie's most important, and unique, ability is her complete immunity to the fungus. Due to a strange mutation in her brain, when the infection struck, she is immune to the bites and spores of the infected. This is illustrated when she bites David and infects him with the virus. It is presumed that if she was properly studied, some form of cure or countermeasure for the infection could be created. This is never clarified, however, since the study will most likely kill her, which Joel can not accept.
JOEL
CLOSED
Not much is known about Joel prior to the events of the cordyceps plague. Joel grew up in Texas with his brother Tommy. When he was younger, Joel married an unnamed woman and they had a daughter named Sarah when he was still in his teens and because of this never had to the chance to attend college. Joel and Sarah lived by themselves in central Texas where Joel worked in construction, possibly as a carpenter due to the reasonable demand for carpenters in Texas.
Promptly after the evacuation from their home with Joel's brother Tommy, Sarah was executed at gunpoint by a soldier. Twenty years after the initial outbreak had wiped out millions of people across the United States, Joel operated as a smuggler of drugs and weapons through the quarantine zone in Boston. Initially Joel looked after Tommy in Boston but their differing perspectives led Tommy to join the Fireflies under Marlene's promises of hope. Tommy eventually became disenchanted with both the Fireflies and Joel due to activities that would give him nightmares during those years. Tommy eventually left Boston after a heated disagreement with his brother.
At some point in this time Joel became acquainted with Tess, who maintains the Boston branch of the underground market and specializes in contraband, working as Joel's partner.
The pair confronted and killed another local dealer Robert after the latter sent two men to kill Tess. However Robert sold their guns to the Fireflies and the two are tasked with the job of transporting a fourteen year old girl named Ellie to the Fireflies' Capitol Building and in exchange, receive a wealth of weapons; compliments of Marlene, leader of the Fireflies, who had purchased firearms which had been stolen from the duo. Joel is reluctant to smuggle Ellie, but eventually follows Tess on the journey.
After Tess sacrifices herself after finding out she had become infected, the two set out on a journey across the U.S, all the way to Salt Lake City. However, after discovering the procedure used to extract Ellie's immunity would result in her death, Joel went on a killing spree at the firefly base, eventually rescuing Ellie and killing Marlene.
The duo returned back to Tommy's Dam after the fiasco where Joel led Ellie to believe they had found others with the immunity, much to her suspicion. There they have lived for the past 5 years, helping protect and rebuild a proper fortress around the power plant.
Joel has been described as a violent thug, a brutal killer, and a torturer. During the aftermath of the epidemic that struck the country, he has resorted to working in black-market dealings and smuggling items or people of interest through quarantine zones or other designated areas. Because of this, he has accumulated valuable knowledge in regards to surviving the post-apocalyptic environment and is a ruthless killer when presented with enemies. He has also revealed to Ellie that he has "been on both sides" in response to having known about a third-party ambush, and this dark past likely contributed to his experience as a hardened survivalist. However, Joel was not always like this. He was a hard working single-father who loved his family dearly, especially his daughter, Sarah but his personality changed, after her death during the epidemic; which is one of the major reasons that caused him to be what he is now. Despite having a rocky relationship with Ellie at first, Joel grew to trust her and finds her reliable at most times such as Ellie spotting for Joel or providing support. As time passes, Joel establishes a father-daughter relationship with Ellie, reminding him of his beloved daughter, Sarah. Whether being selfish, or not wanting to lose another 'daughter' to the whim of another again, he chose to save Ellie and try and start some semblance of a normal life again.
Described as being in his late 40's, Joel knows what the world looked like before it was devastated. Over time, he has begun to become less bound by morality and more driven by doing whatever is necessary to survive.
Joel's appearance indicates that he is in his late 40s or his early 50s. He has a heavy build, with dark hair and a beard.
Joel wears a watch that was a gift from Sarah for his birthday the day before the outbreak; twenty years later, it has broken, likely from two decades of surviving in a post-outbreak world. He keeps the watch in remembrance of Sarah.
TOMMY
OPEN
Tommy grew up in Texas with his brother Joel. He was quick to react during the first moments of the initial Ophiocordyceps unilateralis outbreak, picking up Joel and Sarah to get them to safety albeit ending in Sarah's death. After an unknown time he joined the milita group called the Fireflies, after being convinced by Marlene. He was filled with hope that the world could get better, which led to an argument between him and Joel which ended with them going their separate ways. Before he left, he stated that if Marlene was ever in a jam, she could count on Joel for help. He left the Fireflies and settled down in an abandoned hydroelectric power plant, which he soon made into a safe haven. He then married a woman named Maria, and they became the leaders of the settlement while trying to get the generator fixed. The plant is under constant attack by bandits.
During the fall of 2033, Joel and Ellie stumble upon the power plant while trying to find Tommy. Tommy greets his brother with open arms and welcomes him into the plant, introducing him to Maria. After showing Joel around and getting the power to work, Joel gave Tommy the information regarding Ellie's immunity. Due to leaving the Firefly cause behind him, Tommy declines any offer of taking Ellie to them. This would turn into an argument between the brothers but before a fight could begin, bandits attacked the plant. Tommy, with help from Joel and some of his men, held off the attackers and managed to save the plant. Tommy reconsidered his decision to take Ellie to the Fireflies' lab after seeing her interaction with Joel.
However, before he could leave with Ellie, she stole a horse and ran off. Joel and Tommy gave chase and found her at a dairy, where they were attacked by more bandits. After the attack and arriving back to the town, Joel told Tommy that he was going to take Ellie and Tommy could stay behind. As Joel was about to leave with Ellie, he offered them both a spot in his town, saying there was always a place for Joel. Joel didn't answer but the impression of acceptance and instead just wished Tommy a farewell before riding off.
In the months after Joel and Ellie left, Tommy had managed to turn Jackson County into a small fortified town, using the electricity coming from the dam. After they left Salt Lake City, Joel and Ellie decided to head there. After arrival, Joel helped with the reconstruction of the powerplant and 5 years on it has turned into the heart of the large community it now supports.
Tommy was with Joel for the initial years after the outbreak and aided him in ambushes and raids. It is also very likely that Tommy himself had killed innocent people and he claims to still suffer from nightmares from the years he spent with Joel. Tommy has been seeking redemption for his past crimes by helping Maria build safe havens and communities throughout Wyoming. He cares about those under his charge and puts their well-being before his own. Tommy has a temper, like his brother Joel, but this quickly fades, as he is quick to forgive his brother when they meet again after many years. Tommy also becomes frustrated when Joel brings up his past and he blames Joel for most of it, indicating that Joel may have helmed a lot of their activities. That said, he is capable when he has to be, fearless, and still loves and cares for his brother Joel.
MARIA
OPEN
Maria married Tommy, the brother of Joel, sometime after the initial outbreak of the Ophiocordyceps unilateralis plague. When Tommy left the Fireflies and settled down in an abandoned hydro-electric power plant, which soon became a safe haven, he and Maria later became the leaders of the group.
