Sam shivered, and tucked her blanket more around her legs. With winter on its way the weather was growing colder each day that passed, and it wasn't going unnoticed. Fortunately, she tended to have more bulky and warm clothes than loose summery ones. Unfortunately, the chill still cut to the bone.
She cupped her hands and blew a breath into them, trying to warm her frozen fingers. There was however, one reason to appreciate winter, and that was an increase in commerce. With the days becoming shorter and cooler, more and more people were eagerly snatching up as much supplies as they could to weather out the following months. Be it guns, ammo, or just plain essentials, she probably had it shoved in her garage somewhere.
Speaking of essentials, she thought, it might be a good idea to see if she could scrounge up a space heater somewhere. No way was she freezing her tits off at night.
Ruby had heard of a weapon salesman in the dark parts of town. She really needed a good weapon and she knew that she could find an acceptable one there. Though she wanted the extreme guns, that part was not for fireflies, and she was the firefly leader. She had to go unnoticed, leave the pendant at home, put on some clothes that don't reveal her identity.
She took an old coat she had stashed away in her closet, it was from back in the days when she wasn't a soldier. It was still a good fit. The coat was a red wine color and had a big hood. She then put her ebony colored boots on and headed out the door.
There was a lot of fireflies out today and she had to go somewhere where she couldn't be seen. An old passageway was to the left of Ruby, a good place to be unseen. She tried her best to stay hidden so no firefly soldiers could see her. It was hard when she was the leader but stealth wasn't exactly new to her.
She entered the Temple Square without drawing any attention to herself. There was a lot of people here dressed in torn clothes, dirt on their faces. They looked almost a little bit like stuffed animals thrown away because the child didn't want them anymore. Even though that sounds sad to almost everyone, Ruby simply didn't care. At all. There were a lot of people grabbing her, telling her to buy their stuff but she nudged them off and continued to search for "the garage" she had heard about. How she knows about this is simply just that she keeps a good ear out!
After a time of search she sees this garage with a... boy? sitting in a wheelchair selling weapons. Ruby looked around just to see if anyone was following her and then she headed towards the "boy". She toughened up, making her voice sound different and said " Hello, I heard you were selling some weapons? " As she got closer towards the human, she sees that it isn't in fact a boy, but a woman?
Sam had looked up when she spotted the woman moving through the Temple Square, watching curiously as she had approached. "Yeah," she remarked, turning to wheel herself into the garage towards a makeshift table made of crates and a broken old door. She pulled the stained white sheet covering it off, revealing a plethora of different weapons. "If you've got the means to buy them, they're yours," Sam informed her, her eyes darting quickly to the woman's face. "And no, I don't give discounts. I don't take loans. No IOUs. And having a pretty face won't help you either."
This woman was fierce for a cripple, Ruby thought. She took a look at her weapons as she revealed them for her. " I'll take a military sniper if you have one " Ruby said hiding the hood over her face, trying to be as discreet as she could. "Much business down here?" She then asked the woman.
"Some days," Sam replied, looking over her wares and finding the sniper that had been asked for. "Getting busier down here since the weather started getting colder, y'know? People wanting to stock up on guns, and supplies, and ration cards...it's going to be cold this year. I can feel it."
She looked over the sniper in her hands, admiring it for a moment. "You're going to have a hard time getting this out of here without anyone noticing," Sam remarked, passing the woman the weapon. "See if you like it first. If not, I've got others."
"Yeah I guess" Ruby responds and then she takes a hold of the weapon and inspects it. "It's alright. I wouldn't have come here without a plan." Ruby smirks. after a while of inspecting the sniper she looks at the woman, handing over the weapon to the saleswoman. "I'll take this one and 10 bullets" Ruby said and payed the money she owed her. (260 RP)
"May I ask you, how you ended up in that wheelchair?" Ruby asked.
Sam stiffened as she asked, bitterly recalling the memory. "That was more than ten years ago," she murmured, her tone changing from sharp to somber. "I used to be part of this...group. You might've heard of them. Anyway, we were all in a fight against some military troops and I got hit. Bullet buried itself in my back, grazed my spine, and boom, couldn't walk no more."
"That's harsh." Ruby replied. She thought about the group the woman mentioned. "Could she mean the fireflies?" Ruby thought to herself. What if this lady recognised her from there or something. Ruby's heart began to raise and she stuttered; "Well I best be on my way. Thank you for the weapon." As she took the sniper and the ammo that she had bought. She then started to head away but then stopped and asked the lady her name.
"Samantha," Sam replied, looking up at her. "Sam's easier to say, though. You sure you're gonna be fine getting that back through the Square...?" she trailed off, realizing she didn't know her customer's name.
"Yeah I think so, I doubt you could help me" She laughed looking down on her wheelchair. Maybe that was to harsh but Ruby didn't really care enough to feel sorry for others misfortune. "See ya" she said as she continued her way home again.
"Fuck" she said under her breath. She didn't have an actual plan really. The thought was buying a good gun not a big ass sniper. She had to take the sneaky way home again and then go get a big bag or something to hide it in. There were guns everywhere in this district so no one would probably care about it. Common, she needs a gun to snipe some infected bastards in the head, what else is there to have it? It's a goddamn apocalypse. Everyone needs to defend themselves and their families.
"Well, good luck anyway," Sam shouted after her, frowning as she left. With a sigh she drew the sheet back over her wares, moving a pile of empty cardboard boxes in front of them so that they were now once again well hidden. Whatever the woman had planned for that gun, Sam hoped to hell it was never traced back to her.
As Ruby was heading back to her place, making sure she was not followed by anyone she lay her weapon down in the dark alley. It was hidden for sure beneath a dumpster. She couldn't be gone for long though in case someone did follow her here, so she hurried to her apartment and searched for a big bag that she could hide the sniper in. After a while of searching she found one big enough to almost fit a human inside it.
She headed back to the dumpster and while on her way she bumped in to her friend from the Fireflies. "Hello there, soldier!" Ruby laughed nervously. Her friend Michael laughed at the word soldier. They had been friends for a long time. You could say that they were best friends! "Hi there, RUBYYY" he said back with a taunting voice but laughed meanwhile. "Haven't seen you for a while? What's up?" He asked. Ruby glanced at her bag she was holding, trying to be discrete. "Nothing much, just relaxing on my two days off. It's kinda nice!" Ruby smiled.
They kept talking for a while until Michael realised that she was holding that big bag. "Are you burying a body or what?" He laughed hard. "Actually no, not this time" She smirked. She knew she could trust Michael and she didn't want to lie to him anymore so she figured she could show him this little secret without making things complicated. "Come, I'll show you!" Ruby said and they walked off.
The rest of the day went by slowly for Sam. While the sun was out and it was a half-decent day, she wasn't receiving as many customers as she would've liked. Once in a while she noticed a shady-looking character eyeing her garage up, but he always moved on and then Sam wouldn't see him for another hour. She wasn't foolish though, she knew to keep an eye on him in case he tried anything. If he did, he was going to get a mouthful of bullets. Or...well, maybe not, seeing as that could land her in a whole lot of trouble. But she'd definitely do something.
When they arrived at the dumpster in the hidden alley Ruby turned around to face Michael. "Okay so, this might look strange." she said as she crouched down and searched for the sniper rifle with her hand. It was put deep under the dumpster just for being safe. She finally found it and pulled it out. "Tadaaa" she said.
Michael looked at the Military Sniper with wide eyes "Wow! Where did you get this?" he said as he took the sniper from her and inspected it. "it's in really good shape, not many have these now a days!" Ruby looked to the ground as she said "Well, I bought it at the.. Temple Square..."
The blond haired man suddenly stopped inspecting the weapon an looked over to Ruby instead. "What?" he said and there was a short silence after he spoke again "That's.. How?... Where? Who???" He stuttered. "Didn't anyone recognise you? wow, those people are bad" He laughed.
The sun was beginning to set now, and Sam grimaced. Of all the hours she'd been opened, she'd only sold that one rifle. She couldn't believe her luck. With a sigh she turned to go shut the garage down for the day. As she did, however, she noticed once again the man who had been watching her all that day. He was coming closer. "What do you want?" she called loudly, "we're closed!" The man didn't respond to her. In fact, he didn't seem like he'd even heard her. "Hey!" she shouted, her heart beginning to race a little. "I said we're closed!"
